Your TV Channel Subscriptions Set To Surge—When And How Much?

Hold onto your popcorn, TV lovers! Reaching for your remote might soon come with a financial squeeze, as channel bouquet subscriptions are slated to become pricier, courtesy of increased charges by broadcasters, according to the Economic Times. These new tariffs are set to take effect from February 1, 2024, potentially elevating the cost of your TV viewing experience.

Here's a breakdown of the anticipated price hikes by various networks:

Your TV Channel Subscriptions Set To Surge—When And How Much?
  • Network18 and Viacom18 distributor IndiaCast plan to implement a 20-25% increase.
  • Sony aims to raise tariffs by 10-11%.
  • Zee Entertainment intends to bump up prices by 9-10%.
  • There's uncertainty regarding the changes in tariff by Disney Star.

The specified February 1, 2024, deadline aligns with TRAI rules mandating a 30-day window for the new prices to be enforced following the notification. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will closely monitor these price shifts, especially given the upcoming election year, as the government intervenes to regulate essential prices like food items.

This isn't the first instance of broadcasters hiking prices. The previous increase occurred in February 2023 amid a dispute between broadcasters and cable TV companies triggered by TRAI's introduction of the national tariff order. This led to broadcasters cutting off TV signals to cable TV operators.

Viacom18's decision to charge more stems from its pursuit of double-digit growth in subscriptions after securing BCCI broadcast rights. On the other hand, Disney's plans remain undisclosed following its loss of BCCI telecast rights and its reported non-binding agreement with Reliance for merging its India assets with the Ambani-led company's broadcast arm.

The price hikes by Sony and Zee were attributed to inflation, as per the ET report from a knowledgeable source. Additionally, Disney Star holds the broadcast rights for ICC, sub-leasing TV rights to Zee. However, Zee is yet to fulfill its part of the deal, unlikely to impact Disney Star's pricing as indicated by the mentioned sources.
