Sitharaman’s Budget Day Sarees: A Look At Finance Minister's Choice Of Sarees Through The Years
On February 1, India's Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, is set to deliver her 8th budget, breaking the previous record held by Morarji Desai, who presented five full budgets from 1959 to 1964. Since her appointment in 2019, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's re-election, Sitharaman has not only become the country's first full-time woman finance minister but also the only one to present seven consecutive budgets. Despite this milestone, Morarji Desai still retains the overall record with 10 budget presentations.
Beyond her groundbreaking achievements in office, Sitharaman has captivated the nation with her choice of attire for each budget session. Her sarees, a symbol of Indian tradition and craftsmanship, have drawn widespread attention and admiration, not just for their elegance but also as a nod to India's rich textile heritage. Every year, her saree selection is eagerly anticipated, reflecting the hard work and perseverance of India's marginalized communities and shining a spotlight on their contributions towards the nation's progress.

The tradition of the finance minister's attire on Budget Day has become a focal point of national curiosity. Sitharaman's sarees, in particular, have sparked discussions among a diverse audience, including a notable number of men, highlighting not only her impeccable taste but also the cultural significance of Indian textiles. Her decision to forgo the conventional briefcase in favor of a traditional bahi khata, adorned with the national emblem and wrapped in a ribbon, further emphasizes her dedication to Indian customs and values.
The Significance of the Saree on Budget Day
Year after year, Sitharaman's sarees have served as a canvas to showcase the diversity and vibrancy of India's weaving traditions. For instance, her choice of a pink Mangalgiri silk saree during her first budget presentation was a departure from the norm, symbolizing prosperity and the richness of Indian textiles. In subsequent years, her saree selections continued to convey deep cultural and symbolic messages, from the yellow silk saree worn during the challenging times of the Covid pandemic to the Pochampally silk saree that underscored support for local artisans and the weaving community in Telangana.
Each of Sitharaman's budget presentation sarees has told a story of India's diverse handloom heritage. For Budget 2020, the yellow silk saree with a blue border represented hope and resilience. The following year, she donned a Bomkai saree from Odisha, paying homage to the state's handloom tradition and the artisans of Bomkai village. Her choice for Budget 2023, a red silk saree with black temple motifs, highlighted Karnataka's Kasuti embroidery, while in 2024, she paired the red bahi khata with a blue tussar silk saree featuring Kantha embroidery from West Bengal.
Her consistent choice of handwoven sarees not only underscores her personal affinity for the garment but also elevates the national platform to promote India's rich textile and handloom heritage. As Sitharaman prepares to make history once again, her saree choice remains a subject of intrigue and anticipation. Through her attire, Sitharaman continues to weave a narrative of cultural pride, tradition, and the enduring spirit of India's artisans, making a compelling statement of support for the country's marginalized yet talented communities.
