Khelo India Mission Gets Fresh Push in Budget 2026 to Build Sporting Talent

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has set out a 10-year plan to reshape Indian sport, placing jobs and industry growth at its centre. The new Khelo India Mission aims to move India from occasional success stories to consistent global competitiveness, while also driving large-scale employment.

The Finance Minister said sport now functions as a strong economic sector, not just a medal hunt. "The Sports Sector provides multiple means of employment, skilling and job opportunities. Taking forward the systematic nurturing of sports talent which is set in motion through the Khelo India programme, I propose to launch a Khelo India Mission to transform the Sports sector over the next decade," Sitharaman said.

The 2026 Union Budget places professionalisation of the sports ecosystem at the heart of policy. Under the expanded Khelo India Mission, work will open up far beyond athletes and support staff on the field. The plan links talent development with long-term careers in allied sports services.

Sitharaman outlined how Khelo India Mission growth is expected to boost full-time and part-time roles. Opportunities will range from coaching centres in small towns to large academies, research units and stadium operations. The goal is to build a stable sports economy that supports young professionals across India.

The government also wants the Khelo India Mission to tie into manufacturing through "Make in India". Affordable equipment for different sports is expected to be designed and produced locally. This could reduce import dependence and open entry-level factory and design jobs for trained youth.

By laying out a decade-long Khelo India Mission roadmap, the government aims to lock sport into national planning. The approach seeks to make sport part of India’s identity, with grassroots programmes, elite events and industry jobs linked through one long-term framework.

The Khelo India programme itself began as an effort to rebuild sports culture from the grassroots. It was shaped in 2016-17 by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and formally launched with the first Khelo India School Games in January 2018 to find and support young talent.

Over time, the original Khelo India programme has grown from a single schools event into a broad-based national platform. The new Khelo India Mission promises to build on that journey by adding clearer job pathways and a stronger economic base, while keeping talent spotting and community participation at its core.
