Karva Chauth 2024 Sales Projected To Surpass Last Year's Rs 15,000 Crore Mark

The Karva Chauth festival, set to take place tomorrow, is expected to generate around Rs 22,000 crore in business across India, a significant rise from last year's figure of over Rs 15,000 crore.

This increase highlights the festival's growing economic importance alongside its cultural and religious importance.

Karva Chauth is a traditional festival celebrated in various regions of the country, primarily by married Hindu women, who fast to pray for their husbands' longevity. These figures illustrate that it has now evolved into a major economic event.

Praveen Khandelwal, Member of Parliament from Chandni Chowk, Delhi, emphasised the connection between this year's Karva Chauth and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Vocal for Local" initiative, encouraging the use of locally produced goods.

In the days leading up to the festival, markets across the country have seen a surge in consumer activity. People in cities have thronged to markets to purchase a variety of items associated with the celebration, including jewellery, ethnic attire, cosmetics, and puja essentials.

Popular items include red glass bangles, anklets, toe rings, lockets, and intricately designed Karva thalis. This year also marks the introduction of silver Karvas, which are expected to be in high demand.

In Delhi alone, sales are projected to reach around Rs 4,000 crore, potentially setting new records for this occasion. Markets reflect not only the enthusiasm of women preparing for the fast on Karva Chauth, but also the growing number of men participating in the observance.

The application of mehendi, or henna, has also seen a significant rise in popularity during this festive period, with artists setting up stalls in key areas such as Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place, Delhi.

The economic impact of Karva Chauth is said to go beyond immediate retail activity. The festival often acts as an early indicator for the upcoming wedding season, which starts in November, leading many consumers to place orders for gold jewellery.

Khandelwal also pointed out a cultural shift, noting that more men are now choosing to observe the fast alongside their wives, reflecting a changing dynamic in marital relationships within Indian society.
