Healthcare Leaders Applaud Union Budget 2025 for Boosting Healthcare Infrastructure

The Union Budget 2025 has announced several measures aimed at bolstering India's healthcare infrastructure, with a focus on enhancing medical education, improving cancer care, and reducing treatment costs. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her budget speech on Saturday, emphasized the government's commitment to improving healthcare accessibility and affordability for the common man.

A major highlight of the budget is the proposal to add 10,000 medical seats within the next 12 months as part of the broader plan to increase medical college seats by 75,000 over the next five years. This move is expected to address the growing demand for healthcare professionals and bridge the doctor-patient ratio gap, particularly in underserved regions.

In response to the rising cancer burden, Sitharaman proposed the establishment of day-care cancer centers in all district hospitals over the next three years, with 200 centers to be set up in 2025-2026. This initiative aims to provide cancer patients with timely treatment without the need to travel to major cities, significantly improving access to care in rural and non-metro areas.

The budget also includes a notable provision for reducing the cost of life-saving medications. A total of 36 life-saving drugs, including those used in the treatment of cancer, rare diseases, and chronic ailments, will be fully exempt from basic customs duties. Other critical medicines will benefit from reduced customs duties, helping to lower the cost of treatment for patients with severe health conditions.

Dr. H. Sudarshan Ballal, Chairman of Manipal Hospitals, praised the budget for being "middle-class friendly," highlighting the positive impact of the healthcare initiatives. He noted the establishment of cancer care centers and the exemption of duties on essential drugs as critical steps toward addressing the healthcare needs of the population.

Dr. Ballal also emphasized the inclusion of expanded patient assistance programs, better broadband connectivity for telemedicine, and an increased focus on nutrition programs, all of which are steps toward improving healthcare accessibility, especially for vulnerable populations.

Dr. DK Gupta, Chairman of Felix Hospitals in Noida, also lauded the government's focus on healthcare in the budget, particularly the initiatives to boost medical education and make healthcare more affordable. He noted the ₹98,311 crore allocated to the healthcare sector, marking an 11% increase from the previous year.

Dr. Gupta expressed support for the plans to expand medical tourism under the 'Heal in India' initiative, which aims to attract international patients by simplifying visa norms and enhancing the quality of healthcare services. The budget also includes provisions for a ₹2,500 crore Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to promote domestic pharmaceutical production, further reducing dependence on imports.

With allocations for the Ayushman Bharat Health Insurance Scheme and the Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission, the Union Budget 2025 marks a significant step toward creating a more resilient and inclusive healthcare ecosystem in India.
