Will Bengaluru’s Auto Fares Rise? Associations Push For Change After Bus Ticket Hike
In response to the recent surge in government bus ticket prices in Karnataka, which increased from Rs 7 to Rs 115, the public is feeling the financial strain. This significant hike has had a domino effect, prompting calls for higher auto fares in Bengaluru. Autorickshaw driver associations have formally petitioned the Bengaluru City District Magistrate, requesting a Rs 5 increase per kilometer, which would raise the fare to Rs 40 per kilometer from the current rate of Rs 30.
The conversation around fare hikes comes at a time when transport workers were encouraged by the government's decision to raise bus ticket prices. A meeting of association members to discuss the fare increase was originally scheduled for December 23, 2024, but was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. The meeting has now been rescheduled for the third week of this month, with the goal of reaching an agreement on the new fare structure. However, there is division among auto associations regarding the proposed increase, with some pushing back until the ban on bike taxis is lifted.

The fare adjustment committee, which is pivotal to the decision-making process, includes key figures such as the Bengaluru City District Magistrate, who serves as the Chairman of the Regional Transport Authority. Other committee members include an officer from the Jayanagar RTO office, who will act as Secretary, a Traffic DCP from one of the divisions, a representative from the Legal Metrology Department, and a member from the Consumer Forum. This group is tasked with considering the inputs from various driver associations and making a final decision on fare adjustments.
Despite the push for fare increases, there is a lack of unity among auto driver organisations, particularly regarding the timing of the hike. Driver associations are seeking a consensus before any changes are made, weighing the impact on both drivers and passengers in Bengaluru.
