Kannada actress Ranya Rao has been arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Bengaluru airport after being caught with 14.8 kg of gold.

Ranya, who starred opposite Sudeep in 'Maanikya' (2014), is the stepdaughter of senior IPS officer K. Ramachandra Rao, who currently serves as the Director-General of Police (DGP) at Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation.

Authorities are investigating whether Ranya Rao acted alone or was part of a larger smuggling network operating between Dubai and India. According to PTI, preliminary investigations suggest she may have attempted to leverage her connections to evade customs scrutiny.

Meanwhile, her father, DGP Ramachandra Rao, distanced himself from her actions, stating that she had not been home since her wedding four months ago.

Officials are investigating whether any law enforcement officers, including her IPS relative, were aware of her activities or unknowingly assisted her. Following her arrest, Rao was taken to the DRI headquarters in Bengaluru's HBR Layout for questioning.

Reports indicate that upon landing, Ranya identified herself as the DGP's daughter and allegedly contacted local police personnel to escort her home. This has raised questions about possible collusion or whether law enforcement officers were unwittingly misled into assisting her.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of her involvement and whether any officials facilitated or ignored the smuggling attempt.
