Two HMPV Cases In Karnataka: No Surge In India, Health Ministry Assures Public

The Union Health Ministry has addressed concerns over the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in India, following the detection of two cases in Karnataka.

According to the ministry, these cases were identified through routine surveillance and are not indicative of a larger outbreak in the country.

Two HMPV Cases In Karnataka

HMPV, a respiratory virus, is not new, with the ministry emphasizing that it has been circulating globally, including in India, for some time. The Health Ministry assured the public that there has been no unusual surge in influenza-like illnesses (ILI) or severe acute respiratory illnesses (SARI) in the country, despite reports of similar cases emerging in other countries, particularly China.

Details of the Two HMPV Cases in Karnataka

The first reported case involved a 3-month-old female infant from Bengaluru, who was diagnosed with HMPV after being admitted to Baptist Hospital. The baby had a history of bronchopneumonia and has since been discharged following treatment.

The second case, detected on January 3, involved an 8-month-old male infant who also tested positive for HMPV after being admitted to the same hospital. Like the first patient, this infant had a history of bronchopneumonia and is now recovering.

Both patients have no history of international travel, further confirming that the virus is circulating locally, the ministry stated.

No Cause for Alarm, Health Ministry Reassures Public

The Health Ministry has made it clear that there is no cause for panic, as HMPV remains a common respiratory virus with symptoms similar to those of the flu. "There has been no unusual surge in ILI or SARI cases in the country," said the statement, citing data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) network.

The ministry also stated that it is closely monitoring the situation through all available surveillance channels, with ICMR continuing to track HMPV trends throughout the year. Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) is providing timely updates on the ongoing situation in China, which has experienced a surge in similar respiratory infections.

Preparedness for Potential Increase in Cases

The ministry reassured citizens that India is well-equipped to manage any potential rise in respiratory illnesses. Public health interventions and necessary measures can be deployed promptly if needed.

Despite the global attention on the recent rise in cases of HMPV, especially in China, China's foreign ministry has downplayed the severity, attributing the increase to the usual winter surge in respiratory infections.

India's Health Ministry continues to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens, urging the public to stay informed and follow health guidelines to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses.
