A tragic accident occurred during a Ganesha idol procession in Mosalehosahalli village, Hassan taluk has taken the lives of eight people while injuring at least 25.

A speeding tanker, trying to avoid a motorist, lost control and crossed the road divider, crashing into the crowd even as the Ganesh idol procession was on. This horrific incident was caught on camera and the video has gone viral.

The procession had begun at 8 pm from the pendal and reached Belur-Bilikere National Highway 373 by 8:30 pm, where the tragedy unfolded. The injured are currently being treated at the HIMS hospital in Hassan.

Accident Details and Immediate Response

The tanker was en route from Hassan to Mysuru when the accident took place. Going by the reports in the local media, the driver was drunk and escaped from the spot after crashing into the crowd.

Holenarasipur MLA HD Revanna quickly arrived at the scene. He instructed police officers to ensure that all injured individuals were transported to HIMS hospital without delay. Revanna also criticised the police for their handling of the situation and called for a thorough investigation into the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has responded to the incident saying it is "heart-rending" and his thoughts are with the bereaved families.

"The mishap in Hassan, Karnataka, is heart-rending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. I hope those who have been injured recover at the earliest.

An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000," the message from his office read.

Political Reactions and Demands

MLC Suraj Revanna expressed his dissatisfaction with the police's absence during such a large gathering of over four thousand people. He pointed out that there were no officers present when he visited, which he believes contributed to the chaos.

Compensation and Investigation

HD Revanna urged the government to take immediate action by releasing Rs 10 lakh each as compensation for families who lost loved ones in this disaster. He stressed that this incident should be taken seriously by authorities.
