Stuck In Traffic? Bengaluru Cops Are About To Find Out Why

The Bengaluru traffic police are taking a hands-on approach to address daily commuting challenges by literally joining office-goers on their routes. On August 26, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Bengaluru South-Traffic) Shivaprakash Devaraju launched the 'Join The Commute' campaign (jointhecommutebstp.in), a first-of-its-kind initiative in India.

Devaraju explained to Moneycontrol that citizens can register online to participate, and the police will coordinate with them to determine their usual office commute route. "I'll personally accompany two to three commuters daily, during peak hours, to understand their travel experiences. We'll notify them in advance about the plan," Devaraju stated.

He added that commuters, familiar with their daily routes, can provide valuable insights into specific traffic issues. The Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) will also participate in the commutes. Initially launched in the South division, the campaign may expand to other divisions based on its success.

Devaraju noted that while some issues, such as ongoing infrastructure projects, may be beyond immediate resolution, the police can still take action against parking violations, footpath riding, and assess the efficiency of U-turns and traffic signals. To document the experience, Devaraju will wear a body camera during the commutes.

Commuters can register their daily routes and preferred modes of transport (bus, car, bike, etc.) on the campaign's portal (jointhecommutebstp.in). Selected participants will have senior police officials accompany them on their commutes, allowing the officials to directly experience traffic challenges, such as congestion and delays, and discuss potential solutions. The Bengaluru traffic police aim to use these insights to develop real-time strategies for improving traffic flow and road safety.

Despite being India's tech and startup capital, Bengaluru remains the country's most congested city, according to the 2023 traffic index by Dutch location technology specialist TomTom. The report places Bengaluru sixth globally for congestion in 2023, an improvement from its second-place ranking in 2022.
