Speeding Bus Hits Pedestrian In Chamarajanagar, Fatalities On The Rise In Karnataka

A tragic road accident claimed the life of a pedestrian who was struck by a speeding bus while attempting to cross the national highway near Raghavpur Gate in Begur, Gundlupet taluk. The individual died instantly, adding yet another unfortunate statistic to Karnataka's rising number of road fatalities.

Road safety remains a significant issue in Karnataka, with the state witnessing approximately nine accidents every two hours, resulting in one fatality per hour. National data places Karnataka fifth in the country for accidents per hour, with a rate of 4.5390. States experiencing higher accident rates include Tamil Nadu (7.3179), Madhya Pradesh (6.2137), Kerala (5.0126), and Uttar Pradesh (4.7655). In 2022 alone, Karnataka recorded 11,702 road accident fatalities, highlighting the severity of the crisis.

In response to these troubling numbers, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari recently outlined the Ministry's ongoing efforts to improve road safety. The Ministry has implemented Road Safety Audits (RSA) on all national highways, mandating third-party inspections at every stage-design, construction, operation, and maintenance. A Road Safety Officer (RSO) is assigned to each regional office to oversee these audits and ensure regular identification and rectification of accident-prone areas.

In his statement, Gadkari emphasized several safety measures aimed at making roadways safer. The Ministry has developed the electronic Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR) Project, a centralized system for recording and analyzing accident data across the country. The Ministry has also introduced enhanced guidelines for signage on expressways and national highways to improve visibility and provide intuitive guidance to drivers, as well as mandated airbags for all front passengers, seat belt reminders, anti-lock braking systems (ABS) for specific vehicles, and speed-limiting devices for transport vehicles.

Additionally, Gadkari announced that fitness tests for vehicles will be automated, with the Vehicle Scrapping Policy aiming to phase out unfit and polluting vehicles. The Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP) is also expected to empower consumers by providing a safety rating system for passenger cars. Furthermore, starting October 2025, new regulations will require certain categories of goods vehicles to be equipped with air-conditioned cabins.
