Sonu Nigam Angers Kannadigas; Activists Call for Ban on Singer in Sandalwood After Pahalgam Comments

Singer Sonu Nigam, who was recently speaking with pride about Kannada songs and his love for Karnataka, has stirred controversy with a comment made during a college event. The incident occurred at East Point College, where Sonu Nigam was performing. During the event, a student requested him to sing a Kannada song, to which the singer paused his performance midway. He spoke about his affection for Kannada and his respect for the people of Karnataka. However, his words took a controversial turn when he linked the fan's request to the Pahalgam attack, leading to widespread backlash.

What did Sonu Nigam say?

"I have sung in many different languages. But the best songs are mostly in Kannada. I feel very happy when I come to Karnataka. I come here with great enthusiasm. Usually, people ask me to sing Kannada songs. At every event, if someone shouts 'Kannada', I make sure to sing at least a line in Kannada for them. But the way that boy kept shouting 'Kannada, Kannada' aggressively-I didn't like it. This kind of behaviour is the reason the Pahalgam attack happened," Nigam remarked.

His comment quickly attracted criticism, with many questioning the link between a simple request for a song and a terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Critics accused the singer of making an insensitive connection that could inflame communal tensions.

Pro-Kannada Activists React

The remarks did not go unnoticed by pro-Kannada activists, with Narayana Gowda leading the charge. Gowda expressed his anger, asking how the demand for a Kannada song could possibly be connected to the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam. He went on to state that such remarks were inappropriate and detrimental to the harmony between communities.

"How are the two even related?" Gowda asked, visibly frustrated. He further demanded that Sonu Nigam be banned from performing in Kannada films, calling for the film industry to distance itself from the singer due to his controversial remarks.

The Call for a Ban on Sonu Nigam in Sandalwood

Following this incident, several activists and local groups have called for a ban on Sonu Nigam in Sandalwood, the Kannada film industry. Many believe that his comments were not only disrespectful but also harmful to the spirit of unity among the people of Karnataka. They argue that the singer's remarks could potentially worsen existing tensions, especially at a time when harmony and respect among communities are crucial.

Sonu Nigam, known for his soulful voice and performances in multiple languages, now faces significant backlash from a large section of the Karnataka public. It remains to be seen how his comments will impact his career in the region, particularly with regard to opportunities in Kannada cinema.

As the controversy continues to unfold, social media is abuzz with reactions from both supporters and critics of the singer. Some defend Nigam, claiming that his remarks were taken out of context, while others demand accountability for his words.
