The last rites of former Karnataka Chief Minister SM Krishna, a stalwart in Indian politics, will be performed at his ancestral village, Somanahalli in Mandya district, on Wednesday morning, December 11, 2024. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar confirmed that Krishna's mortal remains would be kept at his Sadashivanagar residence in Bengaluru throughout Tuesday to allow dignitaries and the public to pay their respects.
Krishna, who passed away early Tuesday at the age of 92, was a visionary leader known for his transformative contributions to Karnataka's development and for putting Bengaluru on the global map as an IT hub during his tenure as Chief Minister (1999-2004).

Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Krishna's deep connection to his roots was evident throughout his political journey. His decision to have his final rites performed in his native village reflects his enduring bond with his birthplace.
A Life of Legacy and Achievement
SM Krishna's political career began in 1962, and over the decades, he held several key positions, including India's External Affairs Minister and the Governor of Maharashtra. His leadership was marked by a forward-looking approach, particularly in developing Karnataka's IT-BT sector and modernizing Bengaluru.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and several political leaders across party lines have expressed profound grief over Krishna's demise, acknowledging his immense contributions to the state and the nation. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu remembered Krishna as a "visionary leader" whose friendship transcended political boundaries.
Tributes and Public Homage
The Sadashivanagar residence in Bengaluru has become a place of pilgrimage for grieving citizens, colleagues, and leaders who are gathering to pay their last respects. Arrangements are being made for a dignified farewell that honors Krishna's stature as one of Karnataka's most beloved leaders.
The state is preparing for a large turnout in Somanahalli on Wednesday morning as people from all walks of life are expected to gather for the final rites. This will be a solemn moment to bid farewell to a leader who profoundly impacted Karnataka and left a lasting legacy on the nation's political and developmental landscape.
