Signal-Free Corridors In Bengaluru: Check Cost, Key Routes And Locations

Often plagued by long queues of vehicles, Bengaluru will soon witness less traffic congestion as the Karnataka government has announced plans to develop nearly 100 kilometres of signal-free corridors across 17 locations in the city. This ambitious project is expected to cost Rs 12,000 crore.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar provided details about the project, explaining that the city's infrastructure development plans were discussed with legislators from all political parties. The state government has identified around 17 locations, which will be modeled on the successful Rajajinagar-K.R. Circle signal-free corridor.

According to a Deccan Herald report, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the city's municipal body, selected these locations based on traffic analysis and projected growth patterns for the coming years.

The project includes several key signal-free corridors, such as the 23-kilometre stretch from K.R. Puram to Yeshwantpur-Goraguntepalya, the 5.5-kilometre Hosur Road corridor from Anepalya to Silk Board, and a 10-kilometre elevated corridor from Marenahalli to Kanakapura Road-Thalaghattapura NICE Road. Additionally, a 2.7-kilometre elevated road is proposed from Minerva Circle to Cubbon Park.

Project Details and Timeline

Although the project has been proposed in the state cabinet, the deadline for completion has not yet been fixed. The BBMP will soon provide further details regarding the project timeline. One BBMP official stated that the traffic situation was carefully studied to determine the need for interventions. Analysts forecasted the expected lane requirements until 2044 and suggested signal-free corridors at crucial junctions, which have now been proposed.

The traffic analysis study found that most of the selected corridors experience heavy traffic flow, with speeds dwindling to as low as 15-20 kilometres per hour. This has resulted in significant fuel wastage and a loss of productivity.
