Reddit Post Sparks Debate Over Whether Bengaluru Is India’s Most Expensive City
A Reddit post has triggered an online debate after a user claimed that Bengaluru ranks as the most expensive city to live in across India.
Comparing it with cities such as Pune, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata, the user argued that, when considering the overall cost of living-be it rent, food, transport or lifestyle-Bengaluru tops the list.

Posting under the username 'Optimal-Animal-90', the user wrote: "I've lived in Pune, Ahmedabad, Mumbai. I have friends in Hyderabad and Kolkata. All these cities have affordable options-from street food to local transport like autos. But here, everything is costly."
"Salary of ₹50,000-60,000 is simply not enough"
The post went on to argue that a monthly salary of ₹50,000 to ₹60,000 isn't insufficient to support a nuclear family in Bengaluru.
To illustrate the point, the Redditor cited a recent experience in Mumbai: "I had to travel just 2 km from the railway station and the auto driver charged me ₹30. I was genuinely surprised and asked him to confirm the fare before I got in. Even street food there starts from ₹10-15!"
The user also mentioned how rental prices in cities like Ahmedabad are far lower than those in Bengaluru, concluding that while other cities may be expensive in certain aspects, "In Bengaluru, everything is expensive-from street food to living costs to lifestyle. Everything."
Mixed Reactions Online
The post quickly gathered over 100 comments, with users both supporting and disputing the claim.
One Redditor responded, "Bangalore is nowhere, I repeat nowhere close to being as expensive as Mumbai. I've lived in both for years."
Another said, "Mumbai street food is a different league altogether when it comes to pricing and portion sizes. It's not even comparable."
However, several users agreed with the original post. "Hyderabad is becoming just as expensive as Bangalore. There's been a massive increase in the last year," said one commenter.
A resident of Pune added, "Mate, I'm living in Pune right now and all I want is to move back to Bengaluru. The food and infrastructure here are dreadful."
Others pointed to economic factors like supply and demand: "People are flocking to Bengaluru for a reason, and high demand always means high prices."
Someone from Gurgaon also joined the conversation: "Sorry lads, but Gurgaon is more expensive. The only thing that feels overpriced in Bengaluru is the auto rides-standard cab fares are pretty much the same everywhere."
