'Only Sanskrit Speakers Can Go To Heaven': Udupi Mutt Seer’s Remark Sparks Outrage

Udupi's Puthige Mutt seer, Sugunendra Theertha Swami, sparked controversy with his remark that those who do not know Sanskrit cannot enter heaven. Speaking at the conclusion of Sri Krishna Mahotsav on Sunday, the seer described Sanskrit as a "holy" language that is simple, beautiful, and easy to learn.

"Sanskrit is a world language, spoken by the gods. All languages, including English, originate from Sanskrit. So, those who wish to go to heaven must learn Sanskrit," he claimed.

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, who attended the event, countered the seer's statement, emphasizing that heartfelt devotion is more important than the language used in prayers.

The seer's remarks drew criticism online. Writer and social activist Vaddagere Nagarajaiah took to Facebook, stating, "I learned Sanskrit at Siddaganga Mutt and am now eligible for heaven. But since my parents, relatives, and friends did not learn Sanskrit, I refuse to go to heaven without them."

Sugunendra Theertha Swami is the 30th pontiff of the Puthige Mutt in Udupi, which follows the Vedic tradition of Madhvacharya, the proponent of the Dvaita school of philosophy.
