Onion Prices In Bengaluru Soar To Rs 65/Kg, Adds To Residents Woes

Onion prices in Bengaluru have experienced a significant surge in recent weeks, causing concern among both consumers and traders. The underlying factor behind this price escalation is the erratic weather conditions that have adversely affected the onion harvest in the region. Also, the reduction in the quantity of onions arriving in the markets could also be one of the contributing factor. , However, this upward trend is expected to persist until December when the kharif crop is available for purchase.

The state of Karnataka, which includes Bengaluru, is one of the significant onion-producing areas in the state. Bijapur, Gadag, Chitradruga, Davanagere, and Belgaum are among the prominent onion-producing areas within Karnataka. With an allocation of approximately 60,000 hectares for onion cultivation, the state annually yields approximately 3.60 lakh tons of onions. Notably, Bengaluru is home to a unique onion variety known as the 'Bangalore rose onion.' This distinct onion type was accorded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2015.

Onion Prices In Bengaluru Soar To Rs 65/Kg: Bengaluru Residents Feel The Pinch Of Weather-Driven Hike

However, this year, the onion crop has been severely impacted by unpredictable weather patterns, including irregular rainfall and drought. These adverse weather conditions have led to a reduced onion yield, resulting in a shortage of this essential kitchen staple.

The repercussions of this reduced crop have manifested in the form of rising onion prices. Many local stores and markets have witnessed a substantial increase of over 50 percent in the cost of onions, leaving consumers with the burden of higher expenses for their household needs. Sellers and traders are grappling with the challenge of sourcing an adequate supply of onions to meet the surging demand, as the limited availability of onions exacerbates the situation.

At the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Yard in Yeshwanthpur, Bengaluru, wholesale onion prices reached Rs 65 per kilogram. This sharp increase is a notable departure from the previous weeks when onion prices had remained relatively stable, typically hovering between Rs 35 and Rs 40 per kilogram. The recent spike in prices has left consumers searching for more affordable options and has prompted concerns about the impact on household budgets.

The surge in onion prices, coupled with the elevated costs of pulses and grains, could potentially exert significant inflationary pressure in the upcoming months. Onions are a staple component of daily meals for numerous households, and this price escalation may further elevate their already heightened expenses.

One such consumer is Sunitha Reddy, a resident of Basaveshwar Nagar in Bengaluru. He recently went out to purchase onions and was surprised to find that he had to pay Rs 100 for 1.5 kilograms of onions. This price hike is reflective of the broader trend in the city, where consumers are now experiencing the economic strain of increased onion costs.

The surge in onion prices has caused distress among households and restaurants alike, as onions are a fundamental ingredient in Indian cuisine and many culinary preparations. In response to the crisis, the Karnataka government has taken steps to address the issue by exploring avenues to stabilize onion prices and ensure a consistent supply of this staple food item.
