Okalipuram Corridor Project In Bengaluru Nears Completion, Promising Improved Travel Efficiency

The Okalipuram Corridor, an ambitious eight-lane project in Bengaluru, is nearing completion with the remaining two lines expected to be finalized by February 2025. This development promises to provide seamless, signal-free travel toSR City railway station Rajajinagar Malleshwaram. Last year, a milestone was achieved with the inauguration of a fly and an underpass, facilitating easier beneath the Bengaluru-Tumak railway track, courtesy of Chief Minister Siddaramiah. Initially kicked off in 2014 this project faced delays was revived in 8 to progress towards its completion.

Key to development has been the construction of underpasses beneath the Chennai and Tumkur railway tracks by the Railway Department. The Tumkur track underpass has already been opened to the public, with the completion of the remaining underpass anticipated shortly. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is on track finish pipeline installation and subsequent road works following the underpass construction. BBMP Engineer (Projects) M. Lokesh confidence in the project's completion by the end of February, highlighting the project's strides towards alleviating traffic woes in the area.

Okalipuram Corridor: Addressing Financial Hurdles

However, the project has not been without its financial. A request for an additional Rs 7 crore from the Railway Civil Aviation Authority for the Chennai Underpass project has been made the BBMP Planning Department to the Commissioner due to cost overruns. "The government will resolve the issue soon," assured M. Lokesh. The Chennai Track Underpass work has been hampered by the high volume of train traffic, limiting construction activities to the hours between 12.30 and 4.30.

The entire Okalipuram Corridor project encompasses a budget of Rs 337 crore, which includes costs for land and construction. The BBMP is investing Rs 112 crore in construction works and another Rs 156 crore for acquiring the necessary land. The completion of this corridor is poised to significantly ease traffic congestion for commuters from Rajajinagar, Vijayan, and Malleswaram heading towards Majestic, K.R. Circle, City Market, and beyond. This development marks a crucial step in Bengaluru's ongoing efforts to enhance urban infrastructure and improve travel efficiency for its residents.
