Namma Metro Stations: Nandini to Share Retail Space with Amul After Backlash
Amid rising political and public criticism over the allotment of stalls to Amul at Bengaluru Metro stations, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has issued a formal clarification stating that no special preference was given and the allocation followed a transparent tender process.

What Sparked the Controversy?
The issue gained traction after it was revealed that 10 stalls at various Namma Metro stations were allotted to Amul, a Gujarat-based dairy brand, triggering a backlash from JD(S) leaders and Kannada activists. Critics argued that the move sidelined Karnataka's own dairy brand, Nandini, in favor of Amul, which is run by Gujarat-based GCMMF.
BMRCL Responds: "Open Tender, No Bias"
Addressing the media, BMRCL's Chief Public Relations Officer Yashwanth Chavan clarified,"Shops and stalls within Bengaluru Metro stations are allotted through a competitive tender process. Amul secured 10 stalls through this route. Nandini did not participate in the recent tender."
He added that Amul was allotted 10 stalls for five years, paying a monthly rent of ₹7 lakh. He also stated that if Nandini applies in future tenders, it will be considered like any other bidder, with no bias or preference involved.
Following public pressure, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said he will direct BMRCL to reallocate 8 out of the 10 stalls currently held by Amul to Nandini. He emphasized the importance of promoting Karnataka's own dairy cooperative and expressed willingness to take corrective action.
Where Are the Amul Kiosks Located?
As per current agreements, Amul kiosks will operate at the following Bengaluru Metro stations:
- Pattandur Agrahara
- Indiranagar
- Benniganahalli
- Baiyappanahalli
- Trinity
- Sir M. Visvesvaraya
- Majestic (Kempegowda Station)
- National College
- Jayanagar
- Banashankari
Shops are already operational at two stations, with more launching soon.
Nandini to Open Shops at Metro Stations
Amid the controversy, BMRCL Managing Director M. Maheshwar Rao confirmed that Nandini has now expressed interest in setting up outlets at Metro stations.
"We are ready to provide space on a rental basis. If Nandini proceeds, we will sign an agreement," he said.
This means that Nandini is set to open its shops at Bengaluru Metro stations, depending on the availability of space and completion of formalities.
