Namma Metro’s Pink Line Update: BMRCL Begins Third Rail Testing, Full Operation Expected in 2026

The much-anticipated Pink Line of Bengaluru's Namma Metro has taken a major leap forward as the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officially began third rail testing between Jayadeva and Tavarekere stations. This marks a crucial milestone in the Kalena Agrahara-Nagawara corridor, which is part of Phase 2 of the metro network.

What Is Third Rail Testing?

The third rail is a key component that supplies power to metro trains. BMRCL officials confirmed that this phase is essential for checking the safety and reliability of the system before signal validations, telecom testing, and loading trials begin. These steps are mandatory for certifying the corridor's readiness for public use.

"Third rail testing is the first of many technical validations to ensure the line's operational safety," a BMRCL senior official told The Hindu.

Timeline and Delays

Initially slated for a 2020 launch, the Pink Line has seen repeated delays due to technical and geological challenges. While the corridor's operational date was revised to December 2025, BMRCL now estimates a phased launch in 2026:

Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere (7.5 km elevated stretch): Targeted for March 2026

Dairy Circle to Nagawara (13.8 km underground stretch): Estimated completion by September 2026

Engineering Hurdles

One of the most complex aspects of this 21.3 km project was the tunnelling through Bengaluru's rocky terrain, especially massive granite and dolerite formations, which posed serious excavation challenges. Despite this, BMRCL achieved a major breakthrough in October 2024 by completing the 21 km twin-bore tunnel stretch.

Connectivity Boost

Once fully operational, the Pink Line will enhance north-south connectivity across Bengaluru, easing congestion and providing a faster commuting option for thousands. It will link key residential and commercial zones and interface with other major metro lines, reshaping the city's transport ecosystem.
