Namma Metro Yellow Line: Transitioning To Fully Automated Operations

Rejoice, commuters! The wait for Bengaluru's much-anticipated driverless namma metro trains is finally nearing its end. The first set of six coaches rolled into the Hebbagodi depot amidst cheers on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone for the project.

The arrival of these coaches is a welcome relief after a two-year delay. The contract, signed in 2019, mandated delivery by December 2023, but disputes arose due to challenges meeting India's "Make in India" requirements. However, a partnership with Titagarh Rail in West Bengal finally paved the way for production to begin.

Namma Metros Driverless Train On Yellow Line Set To Cut Travel Time

Out of the 36 trains planned, 15 will operate driverlessly using the advanced Communications-Based Train Control (CTBC) signaling system, commonly called 'driverless technology'. Currently, Namma Metro uses DTG (distance to go) signaling system, in which the time gap between two trains is two-and-a-half minutes. However, CBTC can reduce train headways to less than 90 seconds. These will be exclusively deployed on the Yellow Line, offering the latest in train technology. The remaining 21 trains will be regular "Distant to Go" (DTG) models used for Phase-I extension lines.

While politicians and officials have thrown around various dates, according to Indian Express reports, the estimated date is said to be September 2024 as the operational deadline. Several tests and permissions are still required before Bengalureans can experience the driverless future.
