Namma Metro Riders Face Toilet Fee at 12 Stations as BMRCL Seeks New Revenue

In the wake of a steep fare hike of up to 71%, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has now begun charging commuters to use toilets at select Namma Metro stations - a move that's evoking strong reactions from Bengaluru residents.

Namma Metro Riders Hit with Toilet Fee at 12 Bengaluru Stations Commuters Unhappy After Fare Hike

Passengers are now required to pay between ₹2 and ₹5 to access restroom facilities at 12 metro stations, as part of BMRCL's first phase of monetising public toilets. These stations include:

National College, Lalbagh, South End Circle, Jayanagar, RV Road, Banashankari, JP Nagar, Yelachenahalli, Sir M Visvesvaraya Station (Central College), Dr BR Ambedkar Station (Vidhana Soudha), Cubbon Park, and Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna Railway Station.

Why the Charges?

A senior BMRCL official explained that these toilets are located in unpaid zones, making them accessible to both passengers and the general public. The facilities have been handed over to Sulabh International, a well-known NGO that will manage the maintenance and collect user fees.

"These toilets were being used even by non-Metro passengers. To maintain cleanliness and ensure sustainability, we've introduced nominal user charges," said the official.

Public Reaction: Anger and Disappointment

This latest move has not gone down well with many commuters, who say they are already burdened by the recent fare increase. They argue that toilets and drinking water should be basic, free amenities at public transport hubs.

"We were surprised when we were asked to pay for the toilet at Vidhana Soudha station - especially since it wasn't clean. No handwash, no proper sanitation," said Yashodha R, a regular commuter. "If this continues, will they start charging us for drinking water too?"

Ashwini, another daily passenger, said: "BMRCL should improve basic infrastructure with the extra fare they are collecting - not start monetising necessities."

Hope for Cleaner Facilities?

While some commuters are upset, others are cautiously optimistic. Rashmi M, a passenger, noted that with Sulabh International managing the facilities, cleanliness in women's washrooms may improve, which would be a welcome change.

It must be noted that the fee is only being charged at 12 stations, all in non-paid zones. This includes areas where non-Metro users can access the facilities too.
