Namma Metro Phase-3 Project: Land Plans Finalised For Orange Line, Construction Set To Begin For 2028 Opening
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has made significant progress in finalising the land acquisition plan for Namma Metro Phase 3, which is expected to be operational by 2028. The Orange Line, also known as Phase 3, encountered delays in land acquisition due to the need for additional properties to construct three stations in southern Bengaluru.

Phase 3 of Namma Metro will feature two corridors: JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura (32.15 km) and Hosahalli to Kadabagere (12.5 km). The entire Phase 3 will be fully elevated, covering a total distance of 44.65 km with 43 stations. Initially, 777 private properties covering 1,29,743 square meters were identified for Corridor 1. However, additional land was required for the construction of stations at JP Nagar 5th Phase, Kamakhya Bus Depot, and Hosakerehalli.
According to MS Channappagoudar, General Manager (Land Acquisition) at BMRCL, the identified properties include commercial structures, but no major institutions or heritage buildings. The final cost of land acquisition is still being calculated and may differ from the Detailed Project Report (DPR) estimates due to changes in land-use patterns.
Corridor 1 will primarily run through the western side of the Outer Ring Road, with private land mainly needed for station construction and road widening. BMRCL is also exploring the feasibility of constructing metro-cum-flyovers as part of Phases 3 and 3A.
In Phase 3, two double-deck flyovers may be built: one from JP Nagar 4th Phase to Hebbal (29.2 km) and another from Hosahalli to Kadabagere (11.45 km). The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will play a role in deciding on the construction of the double-decker flyover at Delmia Circle.
The geotechnical investigation contracts worth ₹5.5 crore have been awarded by BMRCL to support the construction of Phase 3's viaducts and stations. The findings from these investigations will help determine the terrain, the necessary machinery, and assist contractors in estimating construction costs.
The project is expected to be operational by 2028, and with the progress made in land acquisition plan, it is expected to be a major boost to the city's transportation infrastructure.
