Namma Metro Phase-3 Project Approved By Union Cabinet: Bengaluru To Get 31 More Stations, 44.65 Km of New Line
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Namma Metro Phase-3 of the Bangalore Metro Rail Project, which includes two elevated corridors spanning a total of 44.65 kilometers with 31 stations. The first corridor will stretch from JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura (along the Outer Ring Road West) for 32.15 kilometers with 22 stations, while the second corridor will run from Hosahalli to Kadabagere (along Magadi Road) for 12.50 kilometers with 9 stations.

Upon completion of Namma metro Phase-3, Bengaluru will boast a 220.20-kilometer active Metro Rail Network. The project comes with a total estimated cost of ₹15,611 crore.
Key Benefits of the Project:
Significant Infrastructure Advancement:
Namma metro Phase-3 marks a major expansion of Bengaluru's Metro Rail Network, adding 44.65 kilometers of new metro lines to the city. This phase will connect previously underserved western areas of Bengaluru, including key locations such as Peenya Industrial Area, IT hubs on Bannerghatta Road and Outer Ring Road, and manufacturing units on Tumkuru Road. Additionally, it will provide connectivity to educational institutions like PES University, Ambedkar College, and Dayananda Sagar University, as well as major healthcare facilities and industrial hubs.
Enhanced Connectivity:
The new corridors will improve overall connectivity within Bengaluru, linking the southern part of the city, Outer Ring Road West, and Magadi Road. This will facilitate better access for residents to commercial centers, industrial areas, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities, significantly improving last-mile connectivity.
Traffic Congestion Relief:
Namma metro Phase-3 is expected to alleviate traffic congestion on heavily used routes such as Outer Ring Road West and Magadi Road. By offering an efficient alternative to road transport, the extended Metro network will help reduce vehicle movement, shorten travel times, and enhance overall road safety.
Environmental Benefits:
The expanded Metro network will contribute to a significant reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuel-based transportation, promoting a greener and more sustainable mode of travel in Bengaluru.
Economic Growth:
Improved connectivity and reduced travel times will boost productivity by enabling more efficient commutes. The construction and operation of Namma metro Phase-3 will create numerous job opportunities across various sectors, from construction and administrative roles to maintenance positions. Additionally, the new metro stations are expected to stimulate local businesses and attract investment in previously less accessible areas.
Social Impact:
The expansion of the Metro Rail network will provide more equitable access to public transport, benefiting diverse socio-economic groups and reducing transportation disparities. This will contribute to an improved quality of life by reducing commute times and enhancing access to essential services.
Multi-Modal Integration & Last Mile Connectivity:
Namma metro Phase-3 includes plans for multi-modal integration at 10 key locations, including JP Nagar 4th Phase, JP Nagar, Kamakya, Mysore Road, Sumanahalli, Peenya, BEL Circle, Hebbal, Kempapura, and Hosahalli. These locations will offer interchanges with existing and upcoming Metro stations, BMTC bus stands, Indian Railway stations, and proposed suburban (K-RIDE) stations. Additionally, all Phase-3 stations will feature dedicated bus bays, pick-up and drop-off zones, pedestrian paths, and auto-rickshaw stands. Parking facilities will be available at 11 key stations, and existing Phase-1 and Phase-2 stations will be integrated with the new Phase-3 stations. There will also be provisions for bike and cycle-sharing facilities, as well as direct connectivity through foot overbridges (FoBs) and skywalks to two railway stations (Lottegollahalli and Hebbal).
