Namma Metro Enhances Security With AI Surveillance, Number Plate Recognition At Key Stations

In a bid to boost commuter safety and perimeter surveillance, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has rolled out an upgraded monitoring system at six metro stations between Baiyappanahalli and MG Road.

The new setup, launched on Thursday, incorporates advanced AI-driven video analytics and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology. Unlike earlier systems which primarily monitored station interiors, this revamped surveillance now extends to areas surrounding each station, Deccan Herald reported.

BMRCL Managing Director M Maheshwar Rao stated that the system aims to provide real-time threat alerts and enhance situational awareness for metro authorities.

"With AI and ANPR integration, we can now actively monitor station environments, quickly flag suspicious activity or irregularities, and respond more effectively to potential threats. This represents a major step towards a safer metro experience in Bengaluru," Rao told DH.

The ANPR system reads and analyses vehicle registration plates near the stations, adding an extra layer of security.

According to the publication, officials noted that the upgraded surveillance is expected to support both crowd control and coordination with law enforcement, particularly during emergencies or heightened security alerts.

Following this pilot rollout at six stations, there are plans to extend the technology across the wider metro network in the near future.

Over 5.35 lakh CCTV cameras geo-tagged in Bengaluru

In a major development for digital policing, Bengaluru has geo-tagged more than 5.35 lakh CCTV cameras throughout the city, The Indian Express reported.

This initiative forms part of the Mobile Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (MCCTNS), which uses digital tools to bolster crime detection and improve police response times.

Since January 2024, over three lakh new CCTV units have reportedly been installed, marking a huge expansion in surveillance infrastructure.
