Nagara App Gets Bengaluru Talking: Meter-Based Fares, No Hidden Charges Amid Auto Fare Overcharging Row
Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has come down heavily on app-based auto services like Ola, Uber, and Rapido, calling their inflated fares "daylight robbery" and directing transport officials to cancel permits and file cases against violators. As commuter complaints mount-particularly during rains and peak hours-a homegrown alternative is gaining traction: the Nagara app (Nagara: Meter Auto & Taxi).

Relaunched last month after its initial rollout in June 2024, Nagara has already onboarded over 11,000 auto drivers in Bengaluru. The app promises government-approved, meter-based fares and zero commission for drivers-emerging as a transparent and commuter-friendly alternative in a space dominated by surge-pricing platforms.
Nagara App Taps Into Public Frustration
The consistent fare hikes by aggregator apps have opened the door for Nagara, developed by Niranjanaradhya N and a small team, to position itself as a people-first mobility solution. Unlike major players who reportedly charge ₹50 per day from drivers, Nagara imposes no daily fee and adheres strictly to RTO-prescribed fares.
This commitment to transparency has sparked a wave of positive attention on social media, with many users praising the app for "bringing the meter back to Bengaluru."
Auto driver Shant Gowda, who uses the app, said: "Other apps attract us with incentives at first but later hike fares and reduce our earnings. Nagara offers fair fares-no tricks, no commissions."
Commuters Look for Balance, Government Plans Crackdown
With interest surging among both commuters and drivers, Nagara is fast emerging as a credible and ethical alternative for short-distance transport in the city.
As the government steps up enforcement and commuters increasingly demand fare fairness, Bengaluru could be heading toward a mobility shift-one that puts the meter and the commuter back at the centre of the auto experience.
