Why Mumbai-Goa Highway Traffic Is Increasing

The current surge in traffic is being linked to the final phase of summer vacations and the approaching monsoon season.

Many travellers are rushing to visit coastal destinations across Konkan and Goa before schools reopen. At the same time, the India Meteorological Department has forecast the onset of the monsoon in Maharashtra around May 26, encouraging tourists to complete their trips before heavy rainfall begins.

This has resulted in continuous queues of vehicles on several sections of the highway, with traffic slowing significantly near major tourist routes and junctions.

Four-Laning Work Adding To Delays

Ongoing highway construction is also worsening congestion on the Mumbai-Goa corridor.

Four-laning work remains incomplete across multiple stretches, with excavation, bridge construction and concreting work still underway in several locations. Temporary diversion roads created for traffic movement are reportedly unable to handle the current vehicle volume.

Areas near Chiplun, Khed, Lanja and Rajapur are witnessing some of the worst congestion.

Travellers say vehicles are moving extremely slowly through partially completed stretches, while the movement of heavy vehicles is creating additional bottlenecks.

Traffic police have advised motorists to check live traffic updates before starting their journey and avoid peak travel hours wherever possible.
