Milestone Achieved: Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project Utilizes Innovative Construction Techniques

Construction of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) has reached a significant milestone with the casting of India's longest U-girders for a rail viaduct. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) began pouring concrete last week to create these 31-meter giants, marking a crucial step towards completing the project's elevated section.

These impressive U-girders will form the backbone of the 8.027 km elevated viaduct running between Benniganahalli and Chikkabanavara on the 'Mallige Line' (Corridor 2). Designed and manufactured by Winsteel Engineering Works, they surpass the previous record of 27.90 meters set for U-girders in Indian metro projects.

L&T's expertise doesn't stop there. They also recently commenced the production of 30-meter U-girders for the Chennai Metro Phase 2 project, showcasing their prowess in cutting-edge construction techniques. A total of 450 of these pre-tensioned concrete giants, each weighing 178 tonnes and made of 69.5 cubic meters of M60 grade concrete, will be utilized in the Bengaluru project.

KRIDE, the project's implementing agency, awarded L&T the contract for Corridor 2's viaduct in 2022 with a deadline of 27 months. Beyond the viaduct, the contract extends to constructing ramps, embankments, bridges, and essential infrastructure for the entire at-grade section of the project.

The use of long-span U-girders promises to significantly reduce construction time and minimize disruption, offering a crucial advantage in fast-paced urban environments like Bengaluru. This innovative approach, coupled with L&T's proven expertise, paves the way for a swift and efficient completion of the BSRP, bringing improved connectivity and convenience to the city's residents.
