Mandating Urdu For Anganwadi Teachers Unfair, Says TV Mohandas Pai In Criticism Of Karnataka Govt Policy
TV Mohandas Pai, Chairman of Arun Capital Partners, shared his views with OneIndia on the Siddaramaiah government's decision to mandate Urdu proficiency for Anganwadi teachers. Pai criticised the move, calling it a divisive policy that undermines Karnataka's linguistic unity.
He argued that the decision unfairly prioritizes Urdu, while neglecting other regional languages like Tulu, Konkani, and Telugu. He stressed that Karnataka is home to diverse linguistic communities, and the government should ensure equal consideration for all languages instead of favoring one over the others.

Pai acknowledged that the issue of communication with Urdu-speaking children in certain districts is real, as many young children only speak Urdu at home. However, he proposed a more balanced approach. Instead of mandating Urdu proficiency, he suggested that the government should encourage spoken knowledge of multiple languages, allowing Anganwadi workers to communicate with children effectively, regardless of the region.
He also warned that such policies could spark unrest among those who support Kannada, the state's official language. Pai urged the government to focus on inclusivity, ensuring that Kannada retains its importance while respecting the linguistic diversity of the state.
He criticised the current move as politically motivated, aimed at appeasing a particular section of the population, and called for its withdrawal.
Pai further highlighted the government's history of minority appeasement, citing examples such as Tipu Jayanti celebrations and disproportionate benefits to the Muslim community. He called for a fair and equal approach to all communities, urging the state to prioritise Karnataka's unity over divisive policies.
