19-Year-Old Youth Commits Suicide, Disrupts Namma Metro Purple Line Services At Attiguppe Station

Thursday afternoon commuters on Bengaluru's Namma Metro faced delays due to a distressing incident at Attiguppe station on the Purple Line. According to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), a young man, approximately 19-20 years old, allegedly committed suicide by jumping onto the tracks as a train approached the station around 2:10 pm on March 21st. The deceased, identified as Dhruv Thakkar, was a first-year student at the prestigious National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in the city, aged between 19 and 20. Dhruv Thakkar hailed from Mumbai.

Metro staff responded by promptly deboarding them at Mysore Road station at the previous stop that caused disruptions to metro services.

Police have initiated investigations and are reviewing CCTV footage.

The student is suspected to have come into contact with the third rail, which supplies electric traction to metro trains.

As of now, train services remain suspended at Attiguppe station. Commuters traveling between Magadi Road and Whitefield are unaffected, but services from Magadi Road towards Challaghat are currently unavailable. BMRCL officials, along with Vijayanagar police, are present at the scene managing the situation.

Meanwhile, Commuters traveling on the Purple Line are advised to check for real-time updates from BMRCL for the latest information on service restoration. Alternative travel options, such as ride-hailing services or public buses, might be necessary for those impacted by the disruption.

The BMRCL is expected to provide further details on the incident and the estimated time for resuming normal services at Attiguppe station.

In January, Metro services on the Green Line were disrupted after a person attempted suicide by jumping onto the tracks at Jalahalli Metro Station. Metro passengers have been urging the BMRCL to install platform screen doors to prevent such incidents.
