Mall in Bengaluru Faces Police Complaint For Denying Entry To Farmer In Dhoti: Report
A Bengaluru mall owner and a security guard are facing a police complaint for denying entry to an elderly farmer wearing a dhoti. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening at GT Mall on Magadi Main Road, where the 70-year-old farmer was turned due to his traditional attire.
The farmer, named Fakeerappa, had visited the mall with his son to watch a movie. However, he was refused entry because of his traditional clothes. This incident has sparked widespread criticism from various groups, including local farmer unions and politicians.

Public Outrage and Protests
Actress and model Gauahar Khan condemned the incident on Instagram, calling it "shameful." She shared a video on her Instagram story, stating, "This is absolutely shameful. Strict action must be taken against the mall. This is India and we all must be proud of our culture."
Following the incident, a group of farmers and a pro-Kannada organization protested in front of the mall. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also criticized the Congress-led government in Karnataka over the matter.
Government Response
In response to public outrage, the Karnataka government decided to take action against the mall. Karnataka Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh announced in the assembly that the mall would be closed for seven days as a penalty. He said, "According to the law, the government can shut the mall for seven days. I spoke to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officers, and the mall will be closed for seven days as an action against the incident."
A video circulating online shows a conversation with the mall's security supervisor who claimed that their dress code prohibits entry for anyone wearing a dhoti. This has added fuel to the fire, leading to more public outcry.
This isn't an isolated incident in Bengaluru. Previously, two start-up founders were denied entry to a restaurant for wearing slippers. Such incidents have raised questions about dress codes and cultural acceptance in public spaces.
The refusal of entry based on traditional attire has highlighted issues of cultural discrimination and respect for local customs. The government's swift action indicates its stance against such discriminatory practices.
The closure of GT Mall serves as a reminder that cultural attire should not be grounds for discrimination in public places. It underscores the importance of respecting traditional clothing in modern settings.
