Leopard Spotted In Bengaluru: Villagers On Edge As Big Cat Attack Pets Near Nelamangala
Villagers in Soladevanahalli, on Bengaluru's outskirts near Nelamangala, are on edge after repeated leopard sightings. The latest incident occurred on Sunday morning when a leopard attacked a dog on the premises of a resident, Bylappa, sparking panic. This marks the second such attack in the area within days, intensifying fears about escalating human-wildlife conflicts.
Residents are increasingly alarmed by the growing frequency of these encounters. Leopards venturing into residential areas have raised safety concerns, especially as they pose threats to both humans and domestic animals. The Bengaluru Rural Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF), Sarina Sikkaligar, acknowledged the issue, noting that similar incidents have been reported in other villages.

"We've relocated three leopards to Bannerghatta Biological Park in the past week and are working to raise awareness among villagers about safety precautions," said Sikkaligar.
To address the problem, authorities have placed ten cages across the Nelamangala forest range, where leopard activity has been prominent. Villagers from Hembalu and Gollatti have reported leopards preying on dogs at night. However, Sikkaligar stressed the challenge of relocating all leopards, partly attributing the issue to villagers encroaching on forested areas and hunting prey like wild boar and deer.
"Leopards often wander into villages in search of food. While we are taking measures to control the situation, villagers must remain vigilant," she added.
With tensions rising, the local community is urging swift action to mitigate the risks posed by these big cats.
