Karnataka Weather: Yellow Alert In Bengaluru, IMD Lists Rain-Affected Areas Across 10 Districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms in several districts of Karnataka on Thursday. In Bengaluru, heavy downpours are expected throughout the day, prompting authorities to declare a yellow alert. Schools and Anganwadis in some parts of the city have declared a holiday, and private companies are advising employees to work from home as a precautionary measure.
Rain-Affected Areas

According to the IMD, the rain-affected districts in Karnataka include Dakshina Kannada, Bijapur, Ballari, Bangalore Rural, Bangalore Urban, Chikkaballapur, Chikkamagaluru, Kolar, Kodagu, Shivamogga, and Tumakuru. These regions are expected to witness heavy rainfall, raising concerns about possible flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Bengaluru Yellow Alert
Bengaluru city has been experiencing intermittent heavy rain over the past few days. In the last 24 hours, the city recorded 23.6 mm of rainfall. With continuous heavy showers forecast for today, the IMD has once again placed Bengaluru under a yellow alert, indicating rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm. The weather department has also predicted thunderstorms in various parts of the city, urging residents to take necessary precautions.
Due to the expected downpour, several schools and Anganwadis in Bengaluru have declared a holiday. Additionally, private companies are encouraging their employees to work from home to avoid the challenges of commuting in waterlogged streets. The Bengaluru Municipal Corporation (BBMP) has taken necessary steps to mitigate the impact of the heavy rain and prevent flooding in vulnerable areas.
In light of the weather situation, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, announced several flood-relief measures during a press briefing on Wednesday. These include the strict removal of encroachments on stormwater drains to ensure the smooth flow of rainwater. He also addressed the tragic incident that occurred earlier this week, where two children drowned in Kengeri lake due to heavy rains. The BBMP has promised to provide a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the victims' families.
IMD's forecast suggests that the IT hub of Bengaluru will continue to experience cloudy skies with intermittent showers throughout the day. Thunderstorms are also expected to accompany the rain, posing additional risks of waterlogging and disruption to daily life. Residents are advised to stay updated on the weather conditions and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
As the city braces for another bout of heavy rain, the government is closely monitoring the situation to avoid any further incidents. With the yellow alert in place, it's crucial for citizens to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols until the weather stabilizes.
