Karnataka Weather Shift: Yellow Alert Issued; Bengaluru Braces for Cool, Rainy Weekend as Monsoon Arrives

Karnataka Weather Alert: After a week of pre-monsoon showers across Bengaluru and several districts in Karnataka, the intensity of rainfall has slightly reduced over the past two days. However, isolated areas continue to experience light to moderate rain.

Now, weather officials suggest that the long-awaited Southwest Monsoon is expected to make its grand entry into Karnataka either today or tomorrow. With this, the state is likely to witness a significant drop in temperatures, with maximums expected to hover around 24°C starting today.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in coastal and Malnad districts including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu, and Hassan on Saturday.

Meanwhile, moderate rainfall is likely in several interior districts, including Bengaluru, Chikkamagaluru, Mysuru, Uttara Kannada, Mandya, Shivamogga, Gadag, Haveri, Tumakuru, Bidar, Davanagere, Chitradurga, Bagalkote, Kalaburagi, and Raichur.

With the monsoon expected to gain momentum, the next week is likely to remain wet and overcast across Karnataka, offering much-needed respite from the summer heat.

The weather agency had issued a nowcast on 24th May 2025 yellow alert warning for three hours of light to moderate rain and thundershowers, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30-40 km/h) over the next three hours in parts of Karnataka, including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, and Belagavi. Temporary power disruptions, traffic snarls, and possible uprooting of weak tree branches are expected. Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid taking shelter under trees, unplug electrical devices, stay away from water bodies, and drive with caution.

Depression Forms Over Arabian Sea, Set to Cross South Konkan Coast Today

A well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea, near the south Konkan coast, has intensified into a depression, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported.

As of 5:30 am today (May 24, 2025), the depression was located near latitude 17.2°N and longitude 73.0°E, approximately 40 km northwest of Ratnagiri in Maharashtra.

According to the IMD, the system is expected to move eastwards and make landfall between Ratnagiri and Dapoli during the forenoon today.

The IMD continues to monitor the system closely and has advised local authorities and residents in the affected regions to stay alert for potential heavy rainfall and strong winds as the depression moves inland.

Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala, today the 24th May 2025:

The Southwest Monsoon arrived in Kerala today, the 24th May, 2025, against the normal date of 1st June. This is first time it has been recorded after 16 years. Thus, southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala 8 days before the normal date. This is the earliest date of monsoon onset over Kerala after the year 2009 when it was set in over Kerala on 23rd May 2009.

Weather blogger Vijay, who runs the X handle "Namma Karnataka Weather,"Bengaluru is bracing for a pleasant and breezy weekend, with the Southwest Monsoon likely to set in over the city today, bringing along rolling clouds and passing drizzles.

According to local weather updates, light rains or drizzles are expected throughout the day under generally cloudy skies. The city woke up to a fresh, overcast morning, and the weather is set to stay cool and soothing-perfect for a warm cup of coffee or tea.

Wind speeds at the 800 hPa level are currently gusting up to 30 knots and may reach 40 knots by evening, adding a breezy charm to the monsoon's arrival.

On Thursday, Bengaluru recorded a maximum temperature of 28.7°C, and Friday's daytime temperature is expected to hover between 27°C and 28°C, offering residents a rare dose of coolness for a May afternoon.
