Karnataka To Extend HSRP Deadline To A New Date After July 4?
The Karnataka High Court has allowed the State Government to extend the deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) until August or September.
A divisional bench consisting of Chief Justice N V Anjaria and Justice K V Aravind reviewed petitions filed by BND Energy Limited and others, urging the State Government to prolong the HSRP installation deadline on Wednesday.

The High Court had previously directed the state government not to take any action against the petitioner for not installing HSRP by May 21. "Now the state government has confirmed that the deadline for HSRP will be extended until August-September, thus amending the May 21 order," the court stated.
Advocate Aditya Sondhi, representing the petitioners, highlighted that the earlier court order preventing action against his clients was set to expire on that day. Advocate General Vikram Huilgol mentioned, "The government has decided to extend the deadline for installing HSRP until August or September. However, the vacation bench's order on May 21 prevented the government from issuing a notification with the new deadline. Therefore, the court must amend the May 21 order. If the bench permits, a notification with the extended deadline will be released within a week."
After considering the arguments, the court has postponed the hearing to July 4.
The Karnataka government initially extended the deadline for HSRP installation from February 17 to May 31, 2024, and has now further extended it to July 4. The Transport Department is contemplating imposing fines on vehicles without HSRP if the deadline is not extended beyond this date.
HSRP Deadline in Karnataka
Vehicle owners in Karnataka will face an initial fine of Rs 500, followed by a fine of Rs 1,000 for continued non-compliance with HSRP installation requirements. We are awaiting the finalization of the model code of conduct and will seek the government's opinion on the matter. If HSRP implementation remains unsatisfactory, we will urge the government to enforce stricter regulations.
