Karnataka Takes Action: Artificial Colors Banned In Gobi Manchurian And Cotton Candy
The Karnataka government announced a ban on the use of artificial colors in 'Gobi Manchurian' and 'Cotton Candy' within the state due to the presence of cancer-causing chemicals. The government emphasized the potential adverse effects on public health, particularly among children.
The food safety and quality department stated that violation of the ban could result in imprisonment and fines. Samples of 'Gobi Manchurian' and 'Cotton Candy' from across Karnataka were collected and analyzed in laboratories.

Following the analysis, the Food Safety Commissioner prohibited the use of any artificial colors in the preparation of 'Gobi Manchurian' and restricted the use of 'Rhodamine B' in 'Cotton Candy' to prescribed limits.
Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao highlighted the continued use of banned chemicals in many food products across the state. He warned of strict action against those found violating the ban.
The order emphasized that prolonged consumption of artificial colors in food could lead to serious illnesses, including cancer. The public has been advised to avoid using artificial colors in food or to use them sparingly.
According to officials, any violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act - 2006, Rule 59 could result in legal action, including imprisonment ranging from seven years to a life term and fines up to ₹10 lakh.
