Karnataka Sees Hidden Surge In Covid Cases, Survey Points to Unreported Cases

A recent survey conducted by LocalCircles highlights a concerning trend in Karnataka's COVID landscape. Over the past weeks, the state has witnessed a surge in COVID cases, including instances of the new sub-variant JN.1.

What's particularly alarming is that in 54% of homes across the state, at least one member exhibited COVID symptoms. Moreover, it appears that the reported numbers of individuals affected by the infection, irrespective of comorbidities, are significantly under-reported.

Karnataka Sees Hidden Surge In Covid Cases, Survey Points to Unreported Cases

Several weeks ago, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued an advisory to district and state authorities, urging them to closely monitor trends related to influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI). This advisory prompted the state government to heighten its vigilance. States were directed to monitor any surge in respiratory illnesses, attributing them to common causes like influenza, mycoplasma pneumonia, and SARSCoV-2.

With a large portion of individuals displaying COVID or viral symptoms bypassing COVID RT-PCR tests, LocalCircles conducted a survey among Karnataka residents to gauge the scope of viral illnesses. Approximately 3000 respondents, consisting of 62% men and 38% women, participated in this survey.

The survey aimed to ascertain the prevalence of COVID, flu, or viral fever symptoms within households in Karnataka. Among the 3783 respondents, 23% reported having four or more individuals in their households exhibiting such symptoms. This figure marks a significant change from a similar survey conducted in August 2023, where 33% of surveyed households in Karnataka reported multiple individuals experiencing COVID or viral symptoms.

It's evident that more cases of COVID are likely going unreported by the government. Despite the current reported active caseload of 1100 in the state, there's a strong indication that the actual number of cases could be considerably higher. The government is urged to thoroughly investigate severe infection cases, fatalities, and conduct genome sequencing to identify any severe variants, if present.

As precautionary measures, locals are advised to adhere to COVID-appropriate behaviors, including getting vaccinated, wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, and limiting visits to crowded places. These actions aim to mitigate the spread of the virus and safeguard public health in Karnataka.
