Karnataka Rains: School Holiday Declared in 7 Districts Amid Heavy Downpour

Monsoon rains have returned with intensity across Karnataka, affecting several districts. Heavy rainfall has been reported in regions like Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Uttara Kannada, Kodagu, and parts of North Karnataka. Due to the adverse weather conditions, schools and colleges in seven districts have been closed as a precautionary measure.

In Uttara Kannada district, a red alert has been issued. Consequently, primary and secondary schools along with PU colleges in 11 taluks including Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Sirsi, Honnavar, Bhatkal, Siddapur, Yellapur, Dandeli, Joida and Haliyal are closed today. However, Mundgod taluk remains unaffected by this holiday announcement.

School Closures Due to Heavy Rainfall

Dakshina Kannada district is also experiencing significant rainfall. As a result of the forecasted heavy rain, District Commissioner H.V. Darshan has declared a holiday for primary and secondary schools today. Similarly, Shivamogga district is witnessing continuous downpour leading to school closures as ordered by DC Gurudatta Hegde.

In Hassan district's Malnad region where rain persists heavily in Sakleshpur and Belur taluks, Anganwadi centres and schools are closed today. In Alur taluk's Kenchamman Hosakote hobli too only Anganwadi centres and primary schools are shut for the day.

Kodagu District Under Orange Alert

Kodagu district is under an orange alert due to potential strong winds and rain. The District Commissioner Venkataraja has announced holidays for Anganwadi centres and educational institutions across the district. The Harangi reservoir is receiving increased inflow with 8 thousand cusecs of water being released from the dam.

Chikkamagaluru's Malnad region is also experiencing torrential rain prompting school holidays in Mudigere, Kalasa, Sringeri, Koppa and N.R.Pura taluks. In Chikkamagaluru taluk itself only Anganwadi centres and schools in Jagar Khanda Aldur Vastare Avathi hoblis are closed today.

Road Closures Due to Landslides

Sakleshpur area has been witnessing heavy rain since Sunday causing landslides near Kadagaravalli leading to road closures due to further landslide threats. Meanwhile Davangere district is also experiencing heavy rainfall resulting in school closures.

The Tunga river is overflowing beyond danger levels in Sringeri taluk within Chikkamagaluru's Malnad region submerging Gandhi Maidan Parallel Road completely underwater prompting advisories against locals tourists visiting riverbanks.

Elsewhere roads near Kuduregundi in Koppa taluk were submerged cutting off access between Kuduregundi Kanuru Kattimane villages while Basarikatte road resembled flowing rivers.

Agricultural Impact Due to Continuous Rain

In Bidar district of North Karnataka continuous rain has damaged crops over 210 hectares while Kalaburagi farmers protested on Sunday demanding compensation for losses incurred due to destroyed pigeon pea black gram green gram crops.

The meteorological department forecasts continued heavy rains across Karnataka for another three days amidst these challenges faced by various regions within the state.
