Karnataka MLAs, Ministers Get 100% Salary Increase After Government Approval
The Karnataka government has sanctioned a 100% salary hike for the chief minister, ministers, and MLAs, sparking a heated debate. The decision is linked to two amendment bills-The Karnataka Ministers' Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill 2025 and The Karnataka Legislature Members' Salaries, Pensions, and Allowances (Amendment) Bill 2025-which are expected to be tabled in the Assembly on Thursday.
Defending the move, Home Minister G Parameshwara cited rising living costs and financial pressures faced by lawmakers. "Just like common people, MLAs are also struggling with increasing expenses. The recommendations came from MLAs and others, and that is why the Chief Minister made this decision. The government will manage to allocate funds for this," he stated.

State Minister MB Patil supported the hike, arguing that fair compensation through an independent committee enhances lawmakers' independence and reduces corruption. "There is nothing wrong with raising MLAs' salaries, but it should not be done arbitrarily. That's why we have a committee for recommendations. Even globally, top leaders are well paid, which makes them independent and less susceptible to corruption," he told ANI.
However, not all legislators are in favor. Congress MLA Dr. Ranganath expressed reservations, saying he personally did not expect a pay hike. "I am a doctor and an MLA. I don't expect a raise, but some MLAs do need a basic salary. If a hike is given, it should be limited to 10-20%," he suggested.
The proposal has drawn sharp criticism, with many questioning its necessity and timing, especially amid Karnataka's financial challenges.
