Karnataka DyCM DK Shivakumar Sparks Row With ‘Even God Can’t Fix Bengaluru’ Remark

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar stirred controversy on Wednesday after stating that even divine intervention could not resolve Bengaluru's worsening traffic and infrastructure issues overnight.

His remark was widely criticised on social media, with many condemning the ruling Congress government for delayed projects and persistent congestion.

"Bengaluru can't be changed in two or three years. Even God can't do that. It can be changed only when proper planning is done and executed well," Shivakumar said.

Speaking at the inauguration of a workshop on road construction, Shivakumar's comments come amid growing concerns from residents and urban planners over the city's deteriorating traffic conditions, delayed metro expansion, and inadequate public transport.

Critics argue that while large-scale infrastructure projects have been announced, execution has been slow and inconsistent.

Economist and Aarin Capital chairman Mohandas Pai challenged Shivakumar's assertion, questioning the government's progress in improving Bengaluru's infrastructure.

"Minister DK Shivakumar, it has been two years since you became our Minister! We applauded and welcomed you as a strong Minister. But our lives have become much worse!" Pai wrote on social media.

Pai highlighted several ongoing issues, including incomplete infrastructure projects, poorly maintained footpaths, and inadequate public transport. He called for urgent measures, such as the immediate procurement of 5,000 new electric buses, a cleaner and more pedestrian-friendly city, and round-the-clock work on metro expansion.

The opposition BJP also slammed Shivakumar's statement, accusing the Congress-led Karnataka government under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of gross incompetence.

"It is very unfortunate that the person who said he would make 'Brand Bengaluru' has said even God cannot fix this. Then who can?" said BJP leader Mohan Krishna while speaking to NDTV.

"God has given an opportunity to a person or a party to serve the people. It is unfortunate that this government has indulged in many activities other than development."

Shivakumar later clarified that his government has released a handbook on roads to address Bengaluru's infrastructure challenges. This includes plans for new road designs and improved bus stands to help ease the city's severe traffic congestion.
