Karnataka COVID Death: Bengaluru Reports First Fatality As Cases Rise in Malleshwaram, Rajajinagar

Karnataka COVID Death: Karnataka has reported a fresh COVID-19 death and a gradual uptick in cases, reigniting public health concerns. An 84-year-old man from Whitefield, Bengaluru, succumbed to the virus on May 17, marking the latest COVID-related fatality in the state.

Amid a sharp spike in COVID-19 cases in neighbouring Kerala, Karnataka is witnessing a slow but steady rise in infections. According to the latest data from the Karnataka Health Department, the state reported five new COVID-19 cases and one death, pushing the total number of active cases to 38. Bengaluru continues to be the main hotspot, accounting for 32 active cases.

Among the newly reported cases in the city, two individuals-one each from Malleshwaram and Rajajinagar-tested positive, further highlighting the virus's re-emergence in populated residential areas. Health officials noted that 92 people were tested in Bengaluru, of whom two were confirmed positive.

The elderly victim from Whitefield had been admitted to the hospital on May 13 and passed away four days later due to COVID-related complications.

Authorities have urged citizens-especially vulnerable groups-to remain cautious, as health teams continue surveillance across the city.

Outside the city, Mysuru reported two new cases, while Ballari, Vijayanagara, Bengaluru Rural, and Dakshina Kannada districts each reported one case.

In response, the Karnataka health department has stepped up preparedness by activating ICU wards and oxygen support facilities in hospitals. Health experts continue to stress the importance of following COVID safety guidelines, such as wearing masks in crowded areas, maintaining social distancing, and regular hand hygiene.

The government has also urged citizens to follow COVID protocols in public transport, malls, offices, and markets. Special caution is advised for senior citizens, children, and individuals with existing health conditions.

Speaking to the media in Bengaluru on Saturday, Health Minister Dinesh Rao assured citizens that the recent uptick in COVID-19 cases in the state is not a cause for concern. "There is no reason to panic. The situation remains normal. Over the past 15 days, we've seen a slight increase in COVID-19 cases, but it is under control," he said.

The minister also confirmed that the State's Technical Advisory Committee had recently convened to review the developments. "We have issued an advisory recommending COVID-19 testing for patients with severe respiratory symptoms, especially those admitted to hospitals," he added.

Rao advised vulnerable groups-including people with compromised immunity, those on immunosuppressant medications, pregnant women, and children-to exercise caution in crowded public spaces. "While wearing masks is not mandatory, it is advisable in crowded areas. It can help prevent not just COVID-19 but also other viral and bacterial infections," he said.

He clarified that there are currently no travel restrictions or movement curbs within Bengaluru or across the state.

The recent COVID spike in Kerala has served as a wake-up call for Karnataka, especially in border districts like Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, where strict containment measures have already been implemented to control the spread.

Experts are also encouraging the public to ensure they are fully vaccinated and receive their booster dose vaccination, which is proven to reduce the severity of infection.

As COVID-19 cases in Karnataka continue to rise, authorities emphasize a 'wait and watch' approach, urging the public to stay informed and follow official health advisories.
