Karnataka: Contractor Dies By Suicide In Bidar, Holds Congress MLA Priyank Kharge's Aide Responsible

A 26-year-old contractor reportedly took his own life on Thursday by lying in front of a train in Bidar, Karnataka.

According to PTI, Sachin Panchal, a resident of Tungadakatti in Bhalki Taluk, Bidar, had undertaken a contract in the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department.

In a suicide note, Panchal accused former councillor Raju Kapanur and seven others of being responsible for his death.

Kapanur is said to be a close associate of Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge.

Priyank Kharge's Response

Addressing the incident, Priyank Kharge stated: "I have just learned about it through the media. I am personally demanding an inquiry. We will ensure that the truth comes out. Whether my supporters or anyone else is involved, as this is the concerned department, nothing will be hidden."

He added: "Wrong is wrong. No matter who it is. I will have it investigated by my department, and if necessary, I will request the Home Minister to look into it."

When asked about Kapanur's alleged involvement, Kharge said he lacked complete information.

"Whether it is my close associate or a Congress supporter, the law is equal for all, and the Constitution is equal for all. Whatever the case, we will take action," he said.

Later, the minister's office circulated a video statement from Kapanur in their WhatsApp group.

In the video, Kapanur explained that Panchal had approached him, claiming to have completed a BTech degree and sought opportunities to secure contracts. Panchal reportedly assured Kapanur he had the necessary licences and was capable of managing such work.

Kapanur said: "I told him that since we did not have the licence, we couldn't apply for tenders. He assured me he would handle it. The first tender was related to the airport. We deposited ₹65 lakh into his account and ₹15 lakh in cash."

Kapanur further alleged that Panchal misled him for six months, claiming he was processing the tender. However, upon enquiring in Bengaluru, they discovered it was all fabricated.

He added that he had filed a police complaint against Panchal.

BJP Demands Priyank Kharge's Resignation

The BJP has demanded Priyank Kharge's resignation in light of the incident.

BJP state president B Y Vijayendra criticised the Congress government in a post on 'X' (formerly Twitter), stating: "It seems that some ministers in the Congress government have given General Power of Attorney (GPA) to their right-hand men and close aides."

Vijayendra also referred to previous incidents where individuals had died by suicide due to alleged harassment by ministers' close associates.

He alleged: "The Congress government is making unfortunate families orphans."

Holding Kharge responsible for the death, Vijayendra demanded: "Chief Minister Siddaramaiah should immediately ask Kharge to resign."
