Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Commits To Enacting Rohith Vemula Act In State Following Rahul Gandhi’s Appeal

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has pledged that his government will introduce the Rohith Vemula Act - legislation aimed at eradicating caste- and identity-based discrimination within educational institutions.

According to a Hindustan Times report, the assurance came in response to a letter from the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, who wrote to Siddaramaiah on April 16, urging the implementation of the Act in the state.

Gandhi referenced the tragic deaths of Rohith Vemula, Payal Tadvi, and Darshan Solanki - all young Bahujan students who allegedly took their own lives after enduring caste-based discrimination in higher education institutions.

"The murder of brilliant young individuals like Rohith Vemula, Payal Tadvi, and Darshan Solanki is utterly unacceptable. It is time we put a decisive end to this," Gandhi stated.

Take a Poll

"I call upon the Karnataka government to pass the Rohith Vemula Act so that no child in India has to experience what Dr B.R. Ambedkar, Rohith Vemula, and countless others have suffered."

Gandhi also cited at length the childhood experiences of caste discrimination faced by Dr Ambedkar, underlining how such oppression remains deeply entrenched in present-day India. He noted that students from Dalit, Adivasi, and OBC backgrounds still routinely encounter "brutal discrimination within our educational system."

Siddaramaiah's Response to Gandhi's Letter

In a reply posted on the social media platform X, Siddaramaiah thanked Rahul Gandhi for his "heartfelt letter and unwavering commitment to social justice."

"Our government is fully committed to enacting the Rohith Vemula Act in Karnataka - ensuring that no student is discriminated against on the basis of caste, class, or religion. We will bring forward this legislation at the earliest opportunity, to honour the dreams of Rohith, Payal, Darshan, and the many others who deserved dignity instead of exclusion," Siddaramaiah affirmed.

The proposed Rohith Vemula Act - a longstanding demand of student activists, Ambedkarite organisations, and civil society groups - seeks to hold educational institutions accountable for caste-based discrimination. The Act also requires the formation of anti-discrimination cells in all higher education institutions and introduces legal penalties for faculty or administrators found guilty of harassment.

Rohith Vemula, a PhD scholar at the University of Hyderabad and a member of the Ambedkar Students' Association, died by suicide in January 2016. In his poignant final note, Rohith expressed feelings of social alienation and injustice - a message that sparked nationwide protests and intense debate over casteism on Indian campuses.
