BJP's Internal Strife Weakens Position In Karnataka Ahead Of 2024 Lok Sabha Elections

As the Lok Sabha elections 2024 approach, political turbulence is apparent in Karnataka, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) facing internal strife and ticket disputes that could potentially alter its earlier advantageous stance against the Congress. In 2019, the BJP secured a dominant win with 25 out of 28 seats, while an independent candidate supported by the BJP won one seat. However, recent developments hint at dissatisfaction amongst key BJP members and a possible shift in voter appeal towards the Congress, particularly after a year following the assembly elections. Tensions within the BJP have escalated with senior leaders expressing discontent over the party's ticket distribution, accusing the party of succumbing to dynastic politics, notably criticizing the influence of Yediyurappa and his family.

BJP s Internal Strife Weakens Position In Karnataka Ahead Of 2024 Lok Sabha Elections

Former Union Law Minister DV Sadananda Gowda, was denied a ticket from Bengaluru North, has shown signs of potentially switching allegiances to the Congress, emphasizing the challenges BJP faces not just in Bengaluru North but across Karnataka. The denial of tickets to seasoned politicians like Gowda and KS Eshwarappa, who has expressed his anger by distancing himself from party activities, highlights the BJP's internal conflicts. Eshwarappa, particularly vocal about his grievances, criticizes the party for endorsing Yediyurappa's 'dynastic politics,' hinting at a deeper issue within. The selection of BI Raghavendra, Yediyurappa's son, as a candidate, further fuels the debate on nepotism within the party.

The BJP's decision to introduce new faces in place of established ones such as Sadananda Gowda, KS Eshwarappa, Pratap Simha, Nalin Kumar Kateel, and CT Ravi has led to unease within the party ranks. These figures are synonymous with the party's Hindutva identity in Karnataka, and their exclusion could pose strategic challenges for the BJP in positioning itself against the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government. Furthermore, the party's reliance on Yediyurappa, despite recent controversies, including a POCSO case against him, signifies a dependence on the Lingayat leader's influence to navigate the electoral landscape.

Beyond the BJP's internal skirmishes, the alliance dynamics between the BJP and Janata Dal (Secular) [JDS] add another layer of complexity to the pre-election scenario. Despite an earlier consensus to contest the Lok Sabha elections collaboratively, disagreements over seat allocations persist, with JDS insisting on contesting from Kolar, Hassan, and Mandya. This unresolved seat distribution reflects the challenges faced by the alliance, with JDS state president HD Kumaraswamy emphasizing the need for a unified strategy to counter the Congress effectively while cautioning against underestimating JDS's resolve.
