Karnataka Bandh: What’s Behind 12-Hour Shutdown In Bengaluru & Beyond? Explained In 10 Questions
Over 2000 organisations have joined a state-wide bandh in Karnataka on Saturday, March 23. The call for the 12-hour shutdown across the state is given by 'Kannada Okkuta,' an umbrella organization representing various pro-Kannada groups.
However, the Siddaramaiah government has not extended the support and day-to-day activities will function like usual. While Namma Metro and the buses services are not impacted, autoricksaws and cab service will stay out of the roads today. The Reason for a 12-Hour Shutdown in Bengaluru and Other Areas in 10 Q&A:

1. Why is the bandh happening?
The 12-hour statewide bandh in Karnataka has been called by pro-Kannada organizations, led by veteran activist Vatal Nagaraj. It was triggered by an assault on a bus crew by pro-Marathi groups in Belagavi, but the broader aim is to uphold Kannadiga pride. The protesters believe Kannadigas are losing jobs and economic opportunities in their own state. Also, the protestors are opposing the Bengaluru Governance Bill 2024 which was cleared by the assembly recently.
2. When is the bandh happening?
The bandh is scheduled for Saturday and will last for 12 hours.
3. Who is supporting the bandh?
Nearly 2,000 pro-Kannada organizations have backed the bandh. Several auto and cab unions, including the Adarsh Auto Union and the Auto Rickshaw Drivers' Union, are participating. Airport cab services will also be affected. The Karnataka State Hotels' Association has extended moral support but will not shut down operations.
4. Who is not supporting the bandh?
The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike has chosen to stay out of the bandh. Many private colleges and schools are also not officially supporting it, as exams are ongoing.
5. How will transport be affected?
- Autos and cabs (Ola, Uber) - Will not operate.
- Public buses (BMTC, KSRTC, NWKRTC, KKRTC) - will run as usual.
- Metro and Railways - Will operate normally, but last-mile connectivity via autos and cabs may be disrupted.
- Airport transport - Likely to be affected due to cab driver participation in the bandh.
6. Will schools and colleges be open?
- Many schools have already closed for the academic year.
- Some schools have declared a holiday, while others will function as usual.
- Private colleges will remain open, as examinations are underway.
7. What about shops, markets, and offices?
- Supermarkets, milk booths, gas stations, and medical facilities (pharmacies, hospitals) will remain open.
- Some smaller businesses may shut down voluntarily.
- Key markets like Gandhi Bazaar, KR Market, and Chickpet may see closures.
8. Will essential services be impacted?
No, hospitals, pharmacies, and medical services will function as usual.
9. Will the bandh be enforced with force?
Vatal Nagaraj has assured that there will be no coercion or forced shutdowns. However, a protest procession is planned from Town Hall to Freedom Park at 11 AM.
10. What should people do if they need to travel?
Passengers should plan their journeys carefully, as first and last-mile transport via autos and cabs may be unavailable. Metro and trains will run as usual.
