Kanakapura Merger: DK Shivakumar's Ambitions Sparks Political Feud
Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, is a man of unbridled ambition, a fact that few of his detractors would dispute. While ambition isn't inherently a flaw, his recent aspirations to expand Bengaluru Urban District to include his own constituency of Kanakapura have raised several questions. For the unversed, Kanakapura is situated in Ramanagara district which was carved out of Bengaluru Rural district in 2007. The district has five taluks inlcuding Kanakapura.
During an address to devotees in his constituency, Shivakumar had urged locals not to sell their land, hinting that Kanakapura taluk might soon become part of Bengaluru Urban District. Currently, Kanakapura is one of the eight taluks situated in Ramanagara District, a region claimed by JDS state leader and Congress's principal opponent, HD Kumaraswamy.

Kumaraswamy swiftly retaliated against Shivakumar's proposal, alleging that Shivakumar's family was seeking to boost their wealth by encouraging speculation that would elevate land values in Kanakapura. This accusation may hold some merit, given the extensive land holdings, including quarries, that Shivakumar and his family possess in the Kanakapura region.
The following day, DK Shivakumar invited JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy to engage in a debate concerning the inclusion of Kanakapura within Bengaluru. Kumaraswamy not only accepted the challenge but also vowed to stage a fast-unto-death protest if Ramanagara District were to be renamed Bengaluru South.
Kumaraswamy said his readiness for a debate, asserting that he had all the necessary documents to support his claims. He argued that simply renaming an area would not foster its development and expressed his determination to prevent the renaming of Ramanagara District. Additionally, he accused Shivakumar of attempting to protect the properties of DLF linked to Priyanka Gandhi's husband, Robert Vadra.
In a further challenge, Kumaraswamy called upon Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, and their fellow cabinet members to publicly affirm that they had not received money for transfers within the past five months, while demanding transparency regarding their actions over the previous few months.
Kumaraswamy also accused Shivakumar and his brother, Bengaluru Rural MP DK Suresh, of illegally occupying land designated by the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board.
Meanwhile, Shivakumar declined to respond to Kumaraswamy's allegations and instead proposed a debate to take place after November 1, either on a news channel or in the Vidhana Soudha, to address the matter comprehensively.
