Kamal Haasan Moves Karnataka High Court Over 'Thug Life' Ban In State Following Language Row

Actor Kamal Haasan has approached the Karnataka High Court, requesting directives to guarantee the release and screening of his upcoming movie 'Thug Life' across the state, reported India Today.

This legal move follows intense backlash stemming from his recent comments regarding the origins of the Kannada language.

Haasan drew criticism in Karnataka after asserting that the Kannada language originated from Tamil-an assertion that has ignited fierce opposition.

With protests mounting and calls to block the release of 'Thug Life', scheduled for a 5 June premiere in Karnataka, the actor is now seeking judicial protection against any hindrance.

The petition, filed by the Chief Executive Officer of his production house Raaj Kamal Films International, appeals to the court to instruct the Karnataka government, police authorities, and film industry bodies not to impede the film's release.

The plea also requests that the Director General of Police and the City Police Commissioner ensure sufficient security is provided for screenings.

In response to demands from pro-Kannada groups, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) declared a ban on the film's release in the state.

This decision was made public on 30 May, following Kamal Haasan's contentious statement concerning the Kannada language.

During the audio launch event of 'Thug Life' in Chennai, Haasan remarked, "Kannada is born out of Tamil"-a statement that provoked widespread uproar across Karnataka.
