The Board of Control for Cricket in India (Board of Control for Cricket in India, BCCI) is expected to soon announce the venues for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 Playoffs and final, but uncertainty continues to surround Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium chances of hosting the title clash scheduled for May 31.

According to a report by ANI, BCCI sources have indicated that the IPL 2026 Playoffs are likely to be split between Punjab and Karnataka. However, the final, originally expected to take place at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium (M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru), could be shifted out of the city if the ongoing MLA ticket controversy is not resolved.

"IPL 2026 Playoffs and final venue will be announced soon. Matches likely to be divided into Punjab and Karnataka. The last time winner should host the final, but MLA ticket issue has created problems in Bengaluru, and if there is no solution, then BCCI will move the final to another city," ANI reported quoting a source.

MLA ticket row: What triggered the controversy?

The issue surfaced ahead of the IPL 2026 opener between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Royal Challengers Bengaluru, RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (Sunrisers Hyderabad, SRH). MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar suggested that each Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) be allotted at least five tickets, arguing that elected representatives should receive priority access to high-demand matches.

The situation escalated after Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar (D K Shivakumar) said that MLAs and Members of Parliament (MPs) would be given three tickets each for matches this season.

Amid the growing debate, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara (G Parameshwara) denied allegations of misuse. He clarified that tickets are primarily sold online and are used by those who purchase them. He also stated that tickets allocated to MLAs are marked as "non-transferable" and can only be used by the legislators and their families, ensuring they are not resold or misused.

Despite these clarifications, the controversy has raised concerns within the BCCI over crowd management and match-day operations, particularly for high-profile fixtures like the final.

Alternative venues under consideration

If Bengaluru is unable to host the IPL 2026 final, the BCCI is expected to shift the match to another major venue. Among the frontrunners are the Narendra Modi Stadium (Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad), Wankhede Stadium (Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai), and Eden Gardens (Eden Gardens, Kolkata). These venues are known for their large capacity, strong infrastructure, and ability to host marquee matches.

Playoff race intensifies

Meanwhile, the IPL 2026 points table remains tightly contested. Ahead of Match 48 between Delhi Capitals (Delhi Capitals, DC) and Chennai Super Kings (Chennai Super Kings, CSK), Punjab Kings (Punjab Kings, PBKS) are leading the standings with 13 points, followed closely by the defending champions with 12 points.

A cluster of teams - Sunrisers Hyderabad (Sunrisers Hyderabad, SRH), Rajasthan Royals (Rajasthan Royals, RR), and Gujarat Titans (Gujarat Titans, GT) - are also tied on 12 points, keeping the race for the IPL 2026 Playoffs wide open.
