IMD Forecasts Contrasting Weather In Karnataka: Heavy Rains in South, Intense Heatwave In North

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather forecast predicting diverse conditions across Karnataka in the coming days.

While Bengaluru and southern Karnataka are set to experience heavy pre-monsoon rainfall, the northern parts of the state are likely to endure extreme heatwave conditions. This contrasting forecast brings both relief and challenges for residents.

IMD Forecasts Contrasting Weather In Karnataka Heavy Rains in South Intense Heatwave In North

According to a report in The Times of India, Bengaluru and the southern regions are expected to receive significantly higher-than-usual pre-monsoon rainfall-approximately 30-40% above the average levels.

This will offer respite following an unusually warm February, helping to moderate daytime temperatures in and around the city.

However, the urban heat island effect may still cause certain densely populated areas to feel warmer than expected. Additionally, coastal Karnataka and the Malnad region are likely to see a 50-60% increase in rainfall, further contributing to cooler conditions in these areas.

In contrast, northern Karnataka is preparing for an intense heatwave, with temperatures forecast to rise between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius in March.

In response, the IMD has issued a heatwave warning, particularly for the northeastern districts, advising residents to take appropriate precautions. The state's health and family welfare department has urged people to stay hydrated, wear protective clothing, and avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours to minimise the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Warmer Nights Expected in Bengaluru

While daytime temperatures in Bengaluru are predicted to remain within the usual range, nighttime temperatures may increase noticeably.

IMD senior scientist C.S. Patil has stated that nighttime temperatures in the city could rise by 1-2 degrees Celsius, making evenings and early mornings warmer than usual. This change may affect comfort levels, particularly for those accustomed to cooler nights.

These variations in Karnataka's weather are attributed to the weakening of La Niña, which generally results in cooler conditions. As La Niña diminishes, it is giving way to warmer weather trends across the state.

Given these contrasting weather patterns, residents are advised to take necessary precautions.

Those in northern Karnataka should follow heat safety guidelines, while people in Bengaluru and southern regions should prepare for warmer nights despite the rainfall. Staying informed with weather updates and adjusting daily routines accordingly will help ensure comfort and safety during this transitional period.
