HSRP Registration Karnataka Website Down, But Deadline To Replace Old Number Plates Extended

The deadline for the installation of High-Security Registration Number Plates (HSRP) has been extended to three months giving much respite to the Vehicle owners. However, a major glitch on the Karnataka Transport Department's website has thrown millions of vehicle owners into a frenzy. As of today, only 10 lakh out of 2 crore vehicles have installed.

The website, crucial for applying and scheduling HSRP installation, has been unreachable for many users over the past few days.

HSRP Registration Site Down

Unable to access the platform, vehicle owners are voicing their discontent on social media and expressing concerns about meeting the deadline. However, the deadline has now been extended by three months.

Govt listens to appeal, extends deadline:

Many X users had earlier urged the authorities to extend the deadline given the website issues and potential for widespread non-compliance.

Fines:

The looming Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 fines for not having HSRPs are causing significant anxiety.

The Transport Department is yet to officially acknowledge the website issues or address the calls for an extension. This lack of communication is further adding to the confusion and frustration among vehicle owners.

According to registration records from the Regional Transport Office (RTO), there are approximately 2.15 crore old vehicles in the state. Among these, around 1.70 crore vehicles were registered in the 15 years leading up to 2019.

Despite the extension, vehicle owners have not shown compliance, and the deadline concludes on May 17. Failure to comply by then will prompt joint actions by traffic police and RTO officials to impose fines. Motorists are expressing discontent and are requesting a one-year extension, despite the state transport department already granting three deadline extensions. A penalty is assured if the HSRP number plate is not installed by May 17, with motorists urging for an additional year to comply.

What are High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP)?

HSRP refers to a specific type of vehicle number plate crafted from aluminum, securely attached to the vehicle using permanent locks. In the top left corner of both the front and rear plates, a chromium hologram of the Ashoka Chakra, measuring 20 mm x 20 mm, is hot-stamped as a security measure to deter counterfeiting.
